The majority of the iron in ground water comes in the form of ferrous iron. When this water is exposed to oxygen from the atmosphere, ferrous is changed to ferric form, resulting in the red colour. As a result, iron removal treatment methods include fast oxidation via chlorine addition, followed by settling and filtration.
